SFC's Statement on the Even Playing Field Act

The Even Playing Field Act was introduced in Congress by Representative Jackie Speier (D CA-14), 2019 Most Valuable Policymaker awardee, Representative Lois Frankel (D FL-14), Senator Dianne Feinstein (D CA), and Senator Patty Murray (D WA). The purpose of this bill is to amend the Ted Stevens Olympic And Amateur Sports Act and provide more equity in Olympic sport.

This bill's introduction puts athlete equality on the right track. Though, it is still a long road toward equality for all Team USA. Athletes all across the country work tirelessly to be the best of their sport, and SFC is working hard to get them the equality they deserve.

"The Even Playing Field Act is a great step to giving equality to all of Team USA," stated Sports Fans Coalition's Executive Director Brian Hess. "As the nation's largest fan-advocacy group, we are excited to work with Representatives Speier and Frankel and Senator Feinstein on advancing equality for all athletes."

The legislation changes the requirements and descriptions of "an equal opportunity" so that Team USA athletes have better opportunities in investment, working conditions, promotional support, wages, stipends, and other compensation. By better defining equal opportunity across amateur sports organizations, we can work to make a better change for the future of American sports.

The Even Playing Field Act will also require every sport national governing body to submit to Congress a report that contains the compensation of amateur athletes, coaches, trainers, managers, administrators, and officials. Within this, the median, minimum, and maximum compensations must be included for the parties paid, disaggregated based on race, gender, and employment category. Holding governing bodies accountable will do a better job of making sure that all athletes are compensated appropriately for their dedication to their sports.

Sports Fans Coalitions is looking forward to the future of this bill and fighting for equality across all Team USA sports.
